Questions and answers

Accessory decisions made clearer

These are the questions readers send most often. Each answer favours fit and field use over feature lists, and links to the guide with more depth.

Support and carrying

How do I know if a tripod head can hold my camera?

Add the weight of the body, heaviest lens, plate or L-bracket and any accessories. Choose a head whose rated load sits comfortably above that total, and use a lens collar for long telephotos. More in the support guide.

Are carbon fibre tripods worth it over aluminium?

Carbon is lighter for the same stiffness and less cold to touch in winter. If you rarely walk far from the car, a well-made aluminium tripod gives similar stability for less money.

Can I take a camera backpack as cabin baggage?

Often, but cabin size and weight limits are set by each airline. Measure the bag fully packed and check the carrier's current rules before travelling. See carrying.

Light and filters

Does a UV filter protect my lens?

A clear or UV filter can shield the front element from spray, sand and smudges. It can also add flare. A lens hood offers impact protection without an extra glass surface.

What strength ND filter should I buy first?

A three-stop ND suits wide apertures in daylight and video. A six-stop gives a little more flexibility for moving water. A ten-stop is for long exposures of clouds and seascapes.

Speedlight or LED panel for a first light?

For stills, a speedlight gives far more power for its size. For video, or if you want to see the light before shooting, start with an LED panel with a high CRI or TLCI rating. See light control.

Capture tools

Why do my UHS-II cards seem slow?

The camera slot or the card reader may only support UHS-I, in which case the card runs at UHS-I speeds. Check both.

Do I need a remote shutter if my camera has a self-timer?

For static subjects and exposures up to 30 seconds, the self-timer often suffices. Add a remote for precise timing, Bulb exposures or triggering from a distance. See remotes.

How many memory cards should I carry?

At least two, so a single failure does not end the shoot. Many photographers prefer several mid-size cards to spread risk.
